Accessibility at Schouwburg Kortrijk

Schouwburg Kortrijk aims to be an open house: a place for relaxation and enjoyment, a safer space for reflection and dialogue. Accessibility is not an additional layer, but a guiding principle that helps determine how we welcome our audience and artists, program events, and communicate. We look not only at physical barriers, but also at social, cultural, sensory, organizational, and financial barriers that can make a visit less straightforward.

Integral accessibility as a working principle

We think of accessibility as a whole. The renovation gives us a strong foundation in the building, but only when infrastructure, hospitality, programming, and audience engagement are aligned does an environment arise where more people feel welcome - as visitors, creators, organizers, volunteers, or staff.

Accessibility is in the details: in what we provide, how we welcome, and how we continue to learn.

  • Infrastructure - We are working on physical and technical accessibility, so that spaces are easily usable in different situations.
  • Hospitality - Reception, volunteers, and the team focus on care, proximity, and clear information, so that you know what to expect.
  • Programming - We choose representation on stage, alternative formats, and projects that arise from the bottom up, without putting people in boxes.
  • Audience - We actively lower financial, social, and cultural barriers that may hinder participation, for example through the 'Pay What You Can' system or the deferred ticket.

Who's missing on our table?

Accessibility is also a question we continue to ask ourselves. Who easily finds their way to the theatre today, and for whom is that less evident? What barriers do we unintentionally create? How can we adapt to change that?

Practical accessibility information

For certain performances or at specific times, we provide extra support. Think of content notes and trigger warnings, sign language, audio description, early boarding, a tactile tour, or alternative seating and standing options... Exactly what is possible varies per performance.

Do you want to know how to reach the building, where you can park or be dropped off, which entrances are easily accessible, or what support is available for a specific performance? Then check out our page with practical info on accessibility.
