Choreographer Lin I-Chin offers a contemporary interpretation of the Taiwanese singing and dancing ritual Khan-bông-kua, which guides the deceased to another world. Two dancers perform a walking dance in shimmering light, clothed in costumes that slowly dissolve. Fleeting and endless at once.

The name Bare Feet Dance Theatre is a nod to dance pioneer Isadora Duncan from the early 20th century. Choreographer Lin I-Chin creates connections between Taiwan’s traditional culture, rituals, and language, forging a bond with people and the land through bodily energy.

‘An Eternity Before and After’ is part of a series based on field research into khan-bông-kua: a folk singing and dancing ritual that guides the deceased to another world. The piece visualises the journey of the soul after death.

Two dancers sway gently, their arms moving softly. The repetitive, minimalist movements unfold slowly - very slowly. Before the audience’s eyes, they grow into patterns of walking, “walking dances” in a light that shimmers across the black walls like fleeting spirits.

This sense of transience is also reflected in the costumes. Made from a dissolvable material, they gradually “disappear” during the performance through the dancers’ sweat. In doing so, the costumes become part of their bodies - breathing and evolving with every movement.

An intimate and profound exploration of life and death.
