Four dancers from the favelas of Rio de Janeiro confront you with the raw reality of life - and survival - on the streets. A small but exceptionally intense performance by choreographer and theatre maker Alice Ripoll that grabs hold of you and refuses to let go.

Do you notice the person who fixes your heating for a small fee, cleans your office, or brings you a coffee? Contact between different social groups, between rich and poor, is often reduced to a minimum. The existence of the other can even remain completely invisible. Theatre‑goers, too, usually find themselves at a safe distance from crime and chaos, within a maintained social order. Yet the enforcement of that order is accompanied by oppression and intimidation.

In 'aCORdo', four performers from the favelas turn existing hierarchies and relationships between everyone present inside out through movement and interaction. In a subtle and seemingly innocent way, a new order emerges in which both dancer and spectator must inevitably reorient themselves. Who is who now? Who steals from whom?

Theatre‑maker and choreographer Alice Ripoll was invited to create a piece about the consequences of the 2014 World Cup and the 2016 Olympic Games for the Brazilian city. Ripoll chose to work from the perspective of those for whom the city offers little to almost nothing: Black residents of the favelas, who live literally on the margins of Brazilian society.

Raw and impulsive, Ripoll highlights the everyday reality of Rio de Janeiro: an overcrowded metropolis marked by invisible yet strictly controlled boundaries between rich and poor.

The four dancers, dressed in identical costumes, stand directly opposite the audience in a delineated space. Through their gestures, situations, and interactions—often revealing confrontation and violence—they create a new space between themselves and the audience.

'aCORdo' illuminates the social, racial, and territorial inequalities deeply rooted in Brazilian society. Through the almost bodily experience the work offers its audience, aCORdo manifests itself as an explicitly political piece.
