Jazz pianist Eric Legnini has been playing piano since the age of six. At the same time, he grew up with a father who was a devoted fan of guitarist Django Reinhardt. In this matinee, he manages to capture both instruments - and their worlds - with remarkable clarity.

“Pianists and guitarists don’t always get along,” says top pianist Eric Legnini. There’s often a hint of rivalry in the air between these two popular instruments — two miniature orchestras in their own right. But in his case, “relations are pretty good,” even though he admits, with a loud laugh, that he’s “a terrible guitarist.”

And how could it be otherwise? Legnini grew up with a father who was a devoted Django Reinhardt fan: “There were always a few of his records playing at home,” he recalls. Over the years he crossed paths with some of the finest guitarists, such as Philip Catherine — a pillar of Plat Pays — and legend Toots Thielemans, who, besides being a harmonica icon, was also a skilled guitarist.

With Six Strings Under, the pianist offers a kind of love letter to the instrument that has moved him throughout his life. But there’s more: besides a wink to the famous series Six Feet Under, of which he’s a fan, the album marks a return to acoustic and instrumental formats — two territories he had set aside for a few years to focus on more electric, guest‑vocalist‑driven projects: the trilogy The Vox, Sing Twice! and Waxx Up (featuring Hugh Coltman). This special matinee promises pure enjoyment.
