This performance, featuring ten dancers and live music, dives into the origins of electro dance and reveals how an underground culture continues to grow and reinvent itself despite mediatisation and commercialisation. It is an ode to resilience, identity and the power of collective movement.

Electro dance is the first French urban dance style built on atypical arm movements set to the rhythm of electro/house and techno music. The style quickly becomes popular through word of mouth, YouTube videos and its visibility during the 2007 Paris Techno Parade. The media pick up the phenomenon but mistakenly refer to it as ‘Tecktonik’, confusing the dance with the name of a company that organises parties and sells merchandise. As a result, Tecktonik is rapidly reduced to a disposable product — something that rises fast and fades just as quickly.

Against the hype, the underground community continues to evolve. With the rise of social networks, electro dance spreads to every corner of the world. The Eboï/Equeen connect online, but also meet at battles and festivals, exchanging experiences and techniques.

Compagnie MazelFreten is acutely aware of the media circus surrounding Tecktonik. That is why Brandon Masele and Laura Defretin return in Rave Lucid to the codes and techniques of electro as a dance form. Through this original group choreography, they create a sense of hypnosis and trance, with music playing a central role. In today’s online era, they also fully embrace the social dynamics that define electro dance.

MazelFreten’s work is strongly inspired by the world of battles. They describe it themselves as “spontaneous, driven and raw”.
