‘Ik ben een boom’ is an intimate, inquisitive journey into masculinity, fatherhood and the legacy of our (fore)fathers. When Jozefien Mombaerts becomes the mother of a son, she suddenly collides with the structures of the patriarchy and the stubborn role models that shape our imagination.

What does it mean today to raise a boy? Where do we find alternatives to the loudest voices in the debate? And which old father‑figures do we carry with us without realising it — the father who speaks more through silence than breath, the emotionally unavailable father, the drunken father? Through a female gaze, she tries to crack open our imagination around masculinity, while speaking honestly about her own fears, desires and doubts.

Jozefien Mombaerts once again creates this musical‑literary road trip together with musician Joeri Cnapelinckx. He has an uncanny ability to set the right atmosphere or suggest answers to unspoken questions through sound and music. Everything that remains unsaid in the text finds its place through him. He doesn’t compose a soundtrack that merely serves the performance — he helps create the world in which the story can exist.
