In this radical re‑reading of the tragedy Iphigenia, the protagonist no longer submits passively to her fate but claims agency over it. De Roovers reveal, with striking clarity, that war is never merely about politics but above all about the human cost it demands.

In Greek mythology, Iphigenia is the daughter of Agamemnon and Clytemnestra. Her father intends to sacrifice her to the goddess Artemis in exchange for favorable winds so the Greek fleet can finally sail to Troy. Only then can the Trojan War begin - the mother of all wars.

The Portuguese writer and theatre‑maker Tiago Rodrigues offers a radical re‑reading of this tragedy. Iphigenia no longer endures her fate passively but takes charge of it. She becomes a powerful, autonomous woman - in the lineage of Antigone - who gives meaning to her own life instead of submitting to divine caprice or to the decisions of men so eager to wage war.

Rodrigues constantly interrogates the story, shifting between different versions. What do we still know of the original tale? Can it be told differently? Who bears guilt or responsibility? How can we resist? Nine performers grapple with these questions and tell a story that shows that war is never merely about politics but, above all, about the human cost it exacts.
