Protest songs, artwork, short films; Dutch phenomenon Sophie Straat refuses to fit into a single box. But whatever she creates, it’s raw, abrasive, gripping and deeply moving.

Protest singer Sophie Straat (1994) saw her career take off like lightning after graduating from art school. Her debut EP ’T is niet mijn schuld won an Edison Award. Her first levensliederen evolved into pop hits like Tweede Kamer (ft. Goldband), and now into punk on her new EP Gebroken Spiegels. Alongside her music, Sophie works as a multidisciplinary artist, creating artwork, photography and films including the short film Mooier Als Je Lacht. But whatever genre she sings or medium she uses, the social message always comes first.

In just a few years, Sophie Straat has grown into “the figurehead of a socially engaged generation of twentysomethings” (Volkskrant), and her music has amassed more than fifteen million streams. She has also built a strong live reputation, performing at wildly diverse festivals from Oerol on the Wadden Islands to Pukkelpop as well as selling out club tours. The highlight: Sophie Straat’s Protestfest, an annual celebration of protest and activism in the performing arts at Paradiso, Amsterdam.

After Pukkelpop and Paradiso, this Dutch phenomenon now gets to inaugurate the brand‑new rooftop hall of our theatre. It’s already destined to be legendary.

Energiek, activistisch, melodieus, warmbloedig, veelzijdig…en inclusief
