How do you bring mental vulnerability to the stage without slipping into clichés or stigmatizing people? In Being Britney, Colette Goossens sets out to find an answer. With great care and striking clarity, she makes the inner logic of psychological unravelling palpable.

‘Being Britney’ is a solo performance in which Colette Goossens plays a young woman who believes she is the pop icon Britney Spears. Britney is experiencing an acute psychosis. In an uncontrolled, associative and feral way, she tries to solve the fundamental questions of her own existence. She finds herself in her bathroom — an intimate space where a whole world unfolds: hallucinations, delusions and extreme emotions.

‘Being Britney’ raises questions about psychosis and the care surrounding it. What is a psychosis, really? Should we treat it as an endpoint? Or might it be more meaningful to look at the rich thoughts and experiences hidden beneath it?
